BEFORE YOU MOVE

Think of it as organizing your life before you box it up. Instead of packing everything you own and sorting it out later, you go room by room and make honest decisions: keep, donate, sell or toss. Only what supports the life you're creating gets packed.
It's called "editing" for a reason. Just like good editor cuts the parts of a manuscript that don't serve the story, pre-move editing cuts the items that no longer serve your life.
What Is Pre-Move Editing, Exactly?
Moving day always feels like it sneaks up on you. Boxes multiply overnight, tape runs out at the worst moment, and somewhere around hour six you're wrapping a chipped mug you haven't seen or used in years just because it's there. This is exactly the moment "pre-move editing" is meant to prevent.
Pre-move editing simply means decluttering and sorting through your belongings before you start packing, not during, and definitely not after you've already hauled everything to your new home. It's the single most overlooked step in a move, and it's the one that saves you the most money, time and stress
Why Decluttering Before You Pack Actually Matters
It saves real money on movers. Most moving companies' price by weight or by truck size and hours. Every box of things you no longer use is money spent moving items you'll likely donate, toss, or shove in a closet within the first month in your new home anyway. Fewer boxes mean a smaller truck, fewer hours, and sometimes even fewer movers needed.
It cuts down on packing time. Packing is exhausting enough without wrapping, boxing, and labeling items you don't even want anymore. Editing first means you're only packing what matters, which makes the whole process faster and lighter, literally and mentally.
It reduces moving day stress. Yes, you'll have fewer boxes to move, but the biggest difference comes when it's time to unpack. Instead of sorting through clutter and wondering where everything belongs, you're surrounded by items that have a purpose in your new home. With less junk, less trash, and fewer unnecessary belongings to deal with, you can spend less time organizing and more time enjoying your new space.
It protects your fresh start. This is the part people underestimate most: your new home deserves a clean slate. Bringing over clutter, expired odds and ends, or things you kept out of guilt just recreates the same mess in a new zip code. A new space is a rare chance to reset, don't waste it by unpacking old chaos into it.
When Should You Start Pre-Move Editing?
Timing makes or breaks this process. Start too late and it becomes another rushed task; start early enough and it becomes genuinely enjoyable.
As soon as you know you're moving. Even before you have a firm date, start mentally flagging items you no longer need. Make a list and add to it has things cross your mind.
At least 4-6 weeks before moving day for most homes. This gives you time to sell items, schedule donations drop-offs, and avoid decision fatigue.
8+ weeks out if you're moving a larger home, have kids' items to sort, or tend to hold onto things sentimentally. Slower, more thoughtful editing tends to lead to fewer regrets.
Room by room, not all at once. Trying to declutter your entire home in a weekend leads to burnout. Tackle one room per session and let your momentum build. Slow and steady wins the race.
A Simple Framework for Editing Before You Pack
Sort into four piles: Keep, Donate, Sell, Toss.
Ask one honest question per item: "Have I used this in the last year, and would I buy it again today?"
Handle sentimental items last. These take the most emotional energy, so don't let them slow down your momentum early on.
Set a donation deadline. Items lingering in the "donate" pile for more than a week should go out the door, literally.
Digitize what you can. Old paperwork, photos, and keepsakes often don't need to take up physical space in boxes.
The Payoff: A Fresh Start That Actually Feels Fresh
The goal of pre-move editing isn't just an efficient move; it's an intentional one. When you take only what you truly use and love into your new home, you're not just saving money on movers or shaving hours off your to-do list. You're making sure your new space starts as a clean slate, not a storage unit for old decisions you never got around to making.
Old mess doesn't belong in a new space. Edit before you pack, and your new home will thank you for it.
